I have been lurking here for a while, gathering ideas and inspiration. We did an addition to our house that included an elevated stone terrace and something had to hold it up!

Performance Icon. That two-word phrase is bandied about so often there's hardly any meaning left in its 15 letters. After all, if a Porsche 911 is rightly referred to as a performance icon, can we call a Honda Civic Si the same? And are we talking any old 911/Civic Si, or just certain years and models? For instance, there is no doubt that the B13 Nissan Sentra SE-R, with its killer SR20DE engine, is a performance icon, but what about the current B17 Sentra SE-R? How about the Spec V? No way - the Versa has a better chassis.

We mention this problem with the Performance Icon label because Volkswagen described the all-new 2010 MkVI GTI to us as the 'performance icon of the brand.' As you may have noticed, Volkswagen's been delving pretty deeply into its past for marketing purposes as of late. First they tried reintroducing the Rabbit name much to the chagrin of Golf fans nationwide, and now they have Max, the black 1964 Beetle telling you that VW is 'Das Auto.' On a smaller scale, it's attempting to remind potential GTI buyers that the new model is both a direct descendant of and flag bearer for the original 1983 MkI GTI. Here comes the begged question: is it?

ENCO Exklusive Gladiator 700 GT Biturbo is angry about something

ENCO Exklusive Gladiator 700 GT Biturbo is angry about something: "

Or at least it looks that way. Maybe it's mad that the new BMW X6 M is stealing all the Porsche Cayenne's uber SUV thunder? Or maybe the Gladiator is mad 'cause ENCO Exklusive dressed up the 'Zuffenhausen' Bull in a Bugatti-like two-tone (and silly looking) black and crimson paint job? Regardless, if you're a fan of buck wild SUVs, you be hard pressed to find a more extroverted aftermarket example.

And just check what ENCO did to the stock Cayenne Turbo's engine - bigger turbos, freer-flowing exhaust, high performance cats and some new manifolds adds up to just about 700 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. As ENCO says of the 700 GT Biturbo when it's at full gallop, 'the Gladiator carries such an incredible amount of kinetic energy that a bazooka could hardly stop it.' You know what? That would be fun to try.

The brakes are equally kooky, especially up front - 16.1 inches, twelve piston calipers. But how do you fit such a massive stopping system into a wheel? Make sure said wheel is twenty-three inches in diameter. Even with those alloys, ENCO found a way to lower the ride height by about two inches. Not only that, they took four of the carbon fiber bucket seats from the GT3 RS and stuck 'em in the cabin. We have to say that four sport buckets are the way to go, regardless of the car. You'll also notice that the interior is liberally doused with bright carbon fiber. So much, in fact, that you might think for a second ENCO was concerned about weight (they're not - the Gladiator still weighs 5,000 pounds).

So there you have it, the Gladiator 700 Biturbo is about as close to a four-seat GT3 RS as you'll ever see. Unless ENCO - or Porsche - decides to do a Panamera. Anyhow, have fun in the comments and remember that beauty is but skin deep and in the beholder's eye, etc. In fact, let's just coin a new term - this here ENCO is all SEMA'd out. Full release after the jump, high-res glory below.

Los Angeles will be a busy show for the Blue Oval boys. In addition to the official introduction of the U.S. Ford Fiesta, the rumormill regarding what's powering the 2011 Ford Mustang range figures to stop spinning once and for all.

We, along with green cars maven John Voelcker, were guests with Ford's global product development chief, Derrick Kuzak, on FoxNews.com's Fox Car Report yesterday. Kuzak didn't divulge any specifics regarding the Mustang during the broadcast, but as we all headed out following the appearance, he did let us know that our Mustang questions would be answered in Los Angeles this December. Earlier published reports have indicated that a new, more powerful, 300+ horsepower base V6 is in the offing, along with the widely-expected 400-horsepower 5.0-liter V8.

The other juicy rumor floating around that we want to see come true is that of an aluminum-block version of the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 for the 2011 Shelby GT500. To that end, we simply asked Kuzak, 'How about an aluminum-block GT500?' He just smiled and replied, 'That's a good thought.' We'll cross our fingers while we wait and see.

2010 Saleen S281 Mustang Preview - Click above for a high-res image gallery

Newly formed Saleen Performance Vehicles released their first 2010-based Mustang, the 435S, this past summer, but the lack of any significant design upgrades left us wanting something a little more. We knew an S281 model was soon to follow, and thanks to Saleen's Flickr page, we now know the car will make its debut at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. The three photos posted on the site actually provide a decent look at the front and rear of the car, and we especially like what's been done to the 2010 Stang's controversial rear with the elongated tail and the diffuser-style rear valence. Check back for full details and plenty of photos when we cover the 2010 Saleen S281 Mustang's live unveiling early next month. Thanks for the tip, Brandon!

Google Street View confirms Elephantitis strikes deer population in Canada

Google Street View confirms Elephantitis strikes deer population in Canada: "
Filed under:

Let's all collectively thank the glorious bit of technology that is Google Street View for letting the world know about the rare and mostly undocumented breakout of Elephantitis in Canada's deer population. Unlike the human form of the disease which is generally characterized by the swelling of a single body part, deer Elephantitis apparently morphs the hapless affected creatures into real-life elephants. If you're driving in the area, extra caution is advisable.

It seems that this street sign was spotted by a Google Street View camera car somewhere in Vancouver. We're not sure how it got there or if it's nothing more than a funny prank, but it is most definitely real. Oh, and for the record, the proper medical term is really Elephantiasis (thanks, Wikipedia!).
